A confusing issue for many veterans making VA disability claims is whether these benefits could affect their Social Security Administration benefits in any way.

- SSA benefits are available to any person, regardless of whether they have served in the military, who provides evidence of a disabling physical or mental health condition according to SSA requirements and whose condition has lasted or is expected to last more than a year or until their passing.
Based on these two definitions of disability, an eligible veteran can receive both VA disability benefits and SSI/SSDI benefits at the same time.
How Does VA Disability Pay Affect SSI Benefits?
Veterans with eligible VA disability claims can receive an adjusted combined income with their normal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) according to an adjustment formula that considers both payments.
Because SSI is a needs-based program, VA disability benefits do count as unearned income that gets weighed against it, but the total of the two benefits is usually greater than each individually.
To calculate the amount a veteran might receive, their VA disability benefit amount minus a general exclusion fee is subtracted from the overall SSI income received to come up with a total monthly benefit.
In cases where a disabled veteran is receiving a VA pension, they do not qualify for SSI since the pension amount is greater than the SSI benefit.
How Does VA Disability Pay Affect SSDI Benefits?
Disabled veterans receiving VA disability benefits may also qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is not at all affected by unearned income through VA disability pay.
Veterans who have paid into the SSDI system are eligible to receive SSDI in addition to any VA disability pay.
Based on this calculation, disabled veterans receiving VA disability pay can receive more pay if they are eligible for SSDI as well.
