This type of assistance can be extremely expensive; fortunately, some may be eligible for veteran resources that can help to pay for disability care should it become necessary.
The VA Aid and Attendance veteran program exists to help disabled senior veterans in such need.

What Is the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit Program?
The VA Aid and Attendance or A&A program provides additional benefits to senior disabled veterans in need of long-term care or their surviving spouses.
This additional veteran resource can increase the monthly benefit a veteran or surviving spouse receives from the VA when that money is used to pay for care assistance that may become necessary due to the veteran’s advancing age and disability.
The additional benefits are added to VA or survivor pensions each month for those who apply and meet the qualifications.
What Kinds of Aid and Assistance Does the A&A Benefit Cover?
The VA A&A Benefit provides additional financial resources for disabled veterans of senior age who must rely on others, either in part or wholly, for their day-to-day care.
This applies to veterans receiving in-home care from an aid, those living in an assisted living community, or residents of a senior care facility, all of which can be prohibitively expensive for many.
This extra benefit provides qualifying seniors with some additional resource help to pay for the care they may now require based on their disability and how their increasing age has made it harder to deal with.
What Are The Eligibility Requirements for VA A&A Benefits?
To be eligible to receive these extra VA resources, a veteran must meet the following requirements:
- Military Service - The veteran must have served in active duty before Sept 8, 1980 for at least 90 days and with at least one day during wartime or served active duty after Sept 7, 1980, for 24 months or more with at least one day during wartime according to a list of wartime periods specified by the VA.
- Age - The veteran must be 65 years of age or older.
- Military Discharge - The veteran must have been honorably discharged from the military.
- Financial Need - The veteran’s financial assets must fall below $155,356 that includes income, bonuses, commissions and tips, Social Security benefits, retirement benefits, and spousal or dependent income. Per the VA A&A Benefit for supplemental VA resources, assets include personal property such as land and investments but do not include the veteran’s primary residence and vehicle, their personal items, and their eligible care benefit.
Veterans can apply for VA A&A benefits at the VA website, in person at a VA location, or seek veteran resources service help from a VA specialist who is familiar with the program and its eligibility requirements.
